St. Patty’s Gold ABC Scavenger Hunt

Posted on March 20, 2020 by amanda

We have already done a few scavenger hunt activities this holiday season, but I have one more to share with you, because they are such a hit!! This was inspired by Fantastic Fun and Learning‘s Gold Scavenger Hunt ABC Activity. We already had the materials and it was a great way to get some of Remi’s energy out this morning!

Supplies:

  • Gold Scavenger Hunt Free Printable (Click Here!)
  • Gold Coins (labeled with A-Z, I used letter stickers but you could use dot stickers and write the letters, or a sharpie directly on the coins should work too!)
  • Something to hold the coins during the hunt (We used a green cauldron from Hobby Lobby)

I had Remington play in the other room while I hid the coins. Then I gave him his bucket and had him get to searching. I originally planned on having him find the coins at random, but after doing our Number Shamrock Hunt, he insisted on finding them in alphabetically order and I was impressed!

When all the coins were found, we sat down together and started matching the coins to the printable. Remington was little overwhelmed at first, and literally said, “This is sooo much work, I just can’t!” The drama is real at three years old. But we worked together and he was so proud as he finished! We temporarily misplaced the Z, and we thought a leprechaun had taken it, but luckily we found it in the couch. Note: don’t be too sneaky in your hiding, or you will be left to go on an extra long hunt!!

This was a great activity to get Remington moving, while also working on letter identification. When we sat down, matching the coins to the printable helped him work on his motor skills, and we also talked about the sound each letter makes as we went.

There is definitely room to adjust this activity based on the ability of your little. Older kiddos could do a time challenge or even a race. You can also talk about vowels and consonants. Let me know below how you kiddo liked this activity, and what you might have done differently!
